Often referred to as the world's greatest open air museum, Luxor is the ideal base to explore the areas many historical sites. Here you will find the Luxor and Karnak Temples, the Valley of the Kings and Queens, the Colossi of Memnon and Deir el Medina (the workers' village).

Situated in the Nile Valley, Luxor is another major destination for discovering the ancient history of Egypt. Consisting of three areas; on the east bank is the city of Luxor, the town of Karnak on the north edge and the ancient city of Thebes on the west bank.

Things to see and do on Holiday in Luxor:

On the northern edge of Luxor is the Temple of Karnak, a huge site worth visiting in the early hours of the day to avoid the stifling heat, the Luxor Temple is situated in the centre of the city while the fascinating tombs of the Valleys of the Kings and Queens are found on the west bank, after being greeted by the two faceless Colossi of Memnon which are the first monument to see on route to the Valley of the Kings.

Out and about on Holiday in Luxor:

Luxor is divided by the Nile River, creating a West Bank and an East Bank, the Luxor and Karnak Temples, the main holiday hotels, shops and tourist market are all on the East Bank. To go from one side to the other can be done by road, though this involves a 15km detour via a bridge to the south of the city. The 'National Ferry' provides an easier and quicker route from one area of Luxor to the other and it runs every 15 minutes during the day. Taxis are plentiful and cheap, providing an easy choice for travelling around Luxor; ensure to agree the fare before setting off.
