Holidays in New York

The epicentre of life on a holiday to New York is Manhattan Island, an absorbing city-within-a-city, full of variety and excitement. Amongst the bedlam Central Park, the Hudson River and Long Island offer a sanctuary from the absorbing 24-hour New York Holiday mayhem. With over 18,000 restaurants, countless bars, world-class museums and more than 10,000 stores brimming with brand names and bargains, there is nowhere else on earth quite like New York.

New York is an extraordinary city which really does offer a holiday with something for everyone.

What To See on Holiday in New York

Where do you begin in a city, when even having breakfast in a deli is considered an experience? A trip to the potent symbol of New York and America in general - The Statue of Liberty is a start followed by a blast of icy cold air on top of The Empire State Building. Burn off some energy or take a horse and carriage ride in Central Park and wander back towards downtown as you window shop along Fifth Avenue. Listen to the shouts of 'BUY BUY BUY, SELL SELL SELL' and watch the furious action as billions of dollars in shares are traded every day from the public viewing gallery in the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street. 'Hang Out' in Greenwich Village and track down rarities in the record shops and bookstores. Make your way on to the Brooklyn Bridge for an unforgettable view of the Manhattan skyline or take a ride on the Staten Island ferry for one of New York's best sight seeing bargains. Go ice skating at the Rockefeller Center or Central Park or take in a show along broadway. Visit Macy's, take the subway, catch a cab. Everything you see whilst on holiday in New York seems worth doing, but whatever you decide - the basic Manhattan message is to DO IT NOW!

Food & Drink in New York

New Yorkers like dining out and with more restaurants per head than anywhere else in America, there isn't anything you can't eat in New York. Some of the cuisine on offer in New York includes Chinese, Italian, Indian, Brazilian, Cuban and West Indian to name a few. New York's best bars are in lower Manhattan particularly in Greenwich Village and most bars serve food of some kind.

Shopping on Holiday in New York

The Big Apple is famous for its holiday shopping and you can't help but be dazzled by the vast array of things there are to buy. Art and antiques, clothing, gadgets, jewellery, records, books, videos, sports equipment and toys are available throughout the city. There are of course the huge department stores such as Bloomingdales, Macy's and the flagship stores on the most famous shopping street in the world - Fifth Avenue.

Airports in New York
New York is served by three major airports - John F Kennedy International which is 15 miles (24km) from Manhattan, La Guardia which is 6 miles (10km) from Manhattan and Newark International which is 16 miles (26km) from Manhattan.

Holiday Climate
New York in the spring and autumn are characterised by clear sunny days and indeed mid-April to mid-June and mid-September through to mid-November are the best times to visit. Summers can be stiflingly hot whereas the winters are very cold with biting winds and temperatures often dropping below freezing.
