Fuerteventura is blessed by the cooling winds from which its name derives, Fuerteventura has obvious appeal to water sport enthusiasts on holiday, but many other less obvious attractions appeal to a wide cross-section of holiday makers. Escapists will revel in the sensation of being amongst the first (and only) people on one of Fuerteventura's 150 beaches; explorers will enjoy great value Fuerteventura holiday car hire to explore the windmills and whitewashed houses of the second largest Canary Island; families might find it difficult to wander from the spacious pools that characterise our Fuerteventura holiday accommodation.

Corralejo

Formerly a small fishing village, Corralejo has slowly developed into the island's principal and best loved resort with a selection of shops, bars and restaurants around which the subdued nightlife is centred. Grandes Playas, 3 Kilometres to the south of Corralejo, provides acres of white sandy beach, edged by crystal clear water.

Caleta de Fuste

Situated on a horseshoe-shaped bay, the superb sandy beach is ideal for families at it shelves gently and is protected by a breakwater. Shore-based activities include cycling, tennis and squash. Nightlife here tends to be on the quiet side but there is a selection of bars, cafés and restaurants and the delicious seafood is not to be missed.

Food & Drink
Fuerteventura has an excellent choice of places to eat, ranging from speciality croissant and baguette shops and take-aways, to British, Mexican, Chinese, Italian, Spanish and Canarian restaurants. Typical local cuisine boasts many dishes which are based on fish and are usually served with the famous wrinkled potatoes and special sauce called 'mojo picon'. Another traditional dish is the popular 'sanocho canario', a dish based on a fish salad, with a hot sauce. Drinks originating from the island are rum, honey-rum and malmsey. Spanish wines and spirits are particularly good value too.

Shopping
Fuerteventura definitely has some bargains to take advantage of, especially spirits and a good choice of perfumes and aftershaves. Craftsmanship is represented mainly by lace, embroidery, leather goods and ceramics. Tobacco produced here is world famous, and cigars from the Canary Islands are of outstanding quality.

Beaches
The main beach at Corralejo consists of light, golden sand, perfectly suitable for bathing although the sea bed is quite rocky. The sand dunes just outside Corralejo stretch for over 11 kilometres and due to their tranquillity are ideal for sunbathing. Caleta de Fuste has a man-made golden sand beach. In the very south of the island the golden sand dunes stretch for miles.

Sports
Windsurfing is probably the most popular sport on the island particularly in August when the renowned competitions take place. There are tuition and hiring centres, which cater for beginners upwards, in both Corralejo and Caleta de Fuste. Surfing takes place along the west coast. Windsurfing takes place along the east coast. Mountain biking is also a favoured activity all over the island with special cycle tracks on the roads. Many of the island's complexes have tennis courts, crazy golf courses and swimming pools. A PADI diving centre can also be found on the island, as well as go-karting, horse-riding and a mini-golf course.

Nightlife
Some of the larger complexes, mainly hotels, have entertainment most evenings and guests from other complexes are usually welcome to visit. These evening events include folklore shows, dancing and cabaret. There are a few British bars in Corralejo which are lively and good fun, plus numerous quiet ones. The main square has live entertainment most evenings including flamenco, folklore and live music. In Caleta de Fuste there is one main nightclub, and a good selection of bars, both lively and quiet.
